Gerard Dworkin. Paternalism: some second thoughts

Definition of Paternalism:

"There must be a usurpation of decision making, either by preventing people from doing what they have decided or by interfering with the way in which they arrive at their decisions." 123p.

"There is nothing in the idea of autonomy which precludes a person from saying: 'I want to be the kind of person who acts at the command of others. I define myself as a slave and endorse those attitudes and preferences. My autonomy consists in being a slave.' " 129p.

In: DWORKIN, Gerard. The Theory and Practice of Autonomy (Cambridge Studies in Philosophy). Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1988.
